Helmsdale, planned in 1814, is a fishing port at the estuary of the River Helmsdale, once home of one of the largest herring fleets in Europe.
We stopped at this village for some coffee and a scone at the Timespan.
I took some extra time to walk around the small town to get a feel for life in northern Scotland.
For the most part, like many of the towns we saw in this region, there was very little sign of life.
The streets were empty and most of the shops were closed.
