We visited Vietnam for the first time in 2020 and, through a cloud of air pollution, we discovered a land of mysterious contrasts.
We found a people steeped in history, yet seemingly lost in the present.
This Communist country seemed to be surviving through a vibrant, if uneven, profusion of individual capitalism.
Gleaming new construction was often framed with antiquated power lines above and every form of trash and garbage below.
Guides were careful to spout the party line, but the reality of what we saw was not so clear.
