travel south pacific new zealand moeraki boulders

I love to experience nature's physical anomalies, and Moeraki Boulders represent one of my favorites.
These large, almost spherical, rocks sit boldly on a sandy beach about an hour and a quarter north of Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island.
Its hard to imagine what force of nature created them... its almost easier to believe Maori legends that these boulders were eel baskets scattered after the sinking of a legendary canoe.
Scientists tell us that they are actually formations created by hardening sea sediment having been exposed through sea erosion.

We rented a car in Dunedin and took the easy drive about an hour north to Moeraki Boulders.
The rocks can be accessed from other locations, but there is a tourist center and cafe which provides parking and easy beach access on well-maintained paths and stairs.
The charge to access the beach from this location is only two New Zealand dollars which the visitor drops into a coin box next to the path.
The facility also has a gift shop and nice clean restaurant area with views of the beach.
