The annual Hawaiki Nui Va'a, a three-day four island outrigger canoe race was about to begin and teams were doing last-minute fixes to their equipment.
The race would leave Huahine for a 44.5 km row to Raiatea, then 28 km to Tahaa, then a finish at Bora Bora 58 km away.
Sponsored teams came from all over French Polynesia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
It was a hot day and excitement was in the air...
