In 2014, we were passing through Eureka and checked online for the best restaurants.
Gills By the Bay was listed as one of the best so we stopped by for lunch.
Its located at the end of a spit south of Eureka and features a beautiful flower-filled patio with water views.
I really enjoyed the well-prepared fish and chips, one of my favorite meals.
The owner saw me photographing the flowers and introduced himself and gave be a grand tour and some local history.
All-in-all, a great experience and one we look forward to repeating...
We returned in November of 2021 and learned that Ben Gill had passed away 3 months earlier at age 93.
His wife Vivian was still dealing with the restaurant.
Because of the season, the flowers were not in bloom and we ate inside instead of on the patio.
We still had a good meal and were served by a very pleasant waitress.
