travel north america united states arizona virgin river gorge

Not far south of St. George, Utah, the Virgin River passes through a beautiful deep gorge it created on its way from the Colorado Plateau onto the northeastern Mojave Desert.
Highway 15 follows the river rising, falling, and twisting through the gorge giving views of colorful carved sandstone and other rock formations and is one of the most expensive parts of interstate highway ever constructed..
It is a divided four lane highway that winds its way dramatically up and down through the Virgin River Gorge crossing back and forth over the Virgin River itself.
In Arizona, it starts at the Nevada border and runs about 29 miles northeast to the Utah border through the northwest corner of Arizona.
Depending on which direction you are traveling and at what time of day you are traveling, the colorful dramatic scenes are ever-changing.
