travel north america mexico sinaloa mazatlan around the city

Mazatlan was shut down by the cruise lines for five years because of cartel violence.
Our guide told us the government made a agreement with the cruise lines that if they brought their business back
they would provide security for visitors.
At least for now, the presence of troups in the street and machine gun carrying escorts for tour buses seems to be working.
We saw no obvious crime or violence during our visit which included six hours of driving into the countryside and the foothills
of the Sierra Madre to visit the small colonial silver mining town of Copala.
While the tour we took was too obviously tied to local shops, we still enjoyed seeing some historic cultural areas like Copala.
