travel united kingdom scotland orkney islands kirkwall earl's palace

The Earl's (and Bishop's) Palace is a Renaissance-style palace in Kirkwall on Orkney Island, and is located just across the street from St. Magnus's Cathedral.
Patrick, the Earl of Orkney began its construction in 1607 after he decided that the accommodation provided by the Bishop's Palace was inadequate.
The roof and some of the walls are gone, but there is a nice feel about this site that translates into an enjoyable experience.
Some of the architectural design is "playful" in it's use of windows, turrets, and stonework.
When you walk through the structure, which is not that extensive, there is a pleasant ambiance to the spaces and their relationships.
It is a relatively short walk from the port, there is an entrance fee, and parking in the area is at a premium.
