travel europe switzerland great st bernard pass

The Great St. Bernard Pass is the third highest road pass in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, and connects Martigny, Switzerland, and Aosta, Italy.
It is the lowest pass between the two highest summits in the Alps, Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa.
It is the most ancient pass through the western Alps and was prominent in paintings of Napoleon crossing the Alps.
We crossed this 8,100 foot pass in our rented Volkswagen van in 1994 with friends Rose, Ken, and Bree Rahn.
