travel europe germany berlin new guard house
ARCHIECT: KARL FRIEDRICH SCHINKEL (1816)

The Neue Wache, or New Guard House, is a German neoclassic building originally built as a guardhouse for the troops of the Crown Pince of Prussia.
It has been used as a war memorial since 1931.
To me, it is significant because of the powerful sculpture by Kathe Kollwitz housed within it.
It is a kind of pieta, a mother holding her son, a grown son... a victim of war.
If you are a parent and a student of history, you will not leave with a dry eye.
