I walked around town to see some of sights and take some photos while Lynn rested on the patio of Kalikala Cuisine, a waterfront restaurant in the shade of a huge beautiful banyan tree.
When I returned, I joined Lynn for a nice iced tea and some people watching.
The owner, Richard, sat down on a bench next to us and talked to us for about 20 minutes... and we learned what a small world it is.
We learned the history of the restaurant, it's site, and how he (a former Los Angeles contractor) and his wife (a former owner of a Newport, Oregon Bakery) came to build the restaurant.
The interesting history of the site included having been originally owned by the actor Richard Boone (Have Gun Will Travel). On the island to do some fishing, Boone purchased the site and ran a restaurant-bar named "Red Pants."
While Red Pants, an argument led to someone getting shot... and then, not long after, the restaurant was mysteriously burned to the ground.
Subsequently, city planners took some of the property by immanent domain and put in some parking.
Somehow, Richard was able to acquire the current site and build Kalikala Cuisine.
We had eaten recently so we only ordered drinks, but the food looked good.
When we got our bill, we found that Richard had comped Lynn's beer.
We vowed to come hungry next time so we could taste the food.
