travel north america mexico sinaloa mazatlan king david bird watching cruise

We took a Princess port excursion in Mazatlan that featured a bird watching cruise around the harbor and through a mangrove estuary run by a company called King David.
The guide, Polo Sanchez, was very knowledgable about both the birds and local culture.
The cruise started in the boat harbor and then turned south and then west into the mangroves.
The second half of the tour included a tractor tram ride across Stone Island through a plantation and then north
along the sandy beaches on the west coast up to the north end where we had lunch at a good restaurant named Molokay (see separate review).
While not quite a expedition into the wild, the tour was interesting and we did see several colorful birds.
Bird encounters included the big pelican that joined us on the front of the boat and several big frigate birds that would swoop down to take fish from your hand.
I really enjoyed talking with the guide about his personal experiences around the area including the influence of the local cartels.
