travel europe switzerland bern zytglogge
The medieval Zytglogge is Bern's oldest landmark having been built around 1218-20 when it served as the gate tower of Bern's western fortifications.
It is located at the end of east end of the Kramgasse where the extended street becomes Gerechtigkeitsgassee.
A clock was first installed in the 15th century and both the clock and the astronomical clock was completely rebuilt by Kaspar Brunner in 1527-30.
The exterior was repainted by Gotthard Ringgli and Kaspar Haldenstein in 1607-10 when then introduced the large clock faces seen today.
