travel europe switzerland bern around the city

Bern, the "federal city," is the capital of the canton of Bern and also the de facto capital of Switzerland with a population of about 144,000.
We have used the hostel in Bern for stops on at least two trips to Switzerland.
One of its great attractions is that it is near the Aare River where everyone goes to float in the strong current in warm weather.
From the hostel, there is a steep pathway up the bluffs to the Bundeshaus and downtown.
