We visited Lillehammer in July of 1994, not too long before it was to be the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Here, we visited the Maihaugen, one of Europe's largest open-air folk museums featuring more than 130 traditional buildings from the Gudbrandsdal valley.

The huge Maihaugen sits on a large plot of open hillside where these farm buildings, some with hand-tied fences, seemed to grow out of the earth.

In July, a whole family of workers make the farm come alive while guides, in authentic dress, explain Norwegian architecture and culture.

Housing ranges from small farmers huts to large communal bunkhouses.

Orignially built about 1200, it is furnished to represent a country church of the 1770s, Maihaugen, Lillehammer, Norway, 1994.

Many of the traditional structures feature "green" technology with their sod roofs.
