Almost anywhere you go in Venice you will find wellheads which privided water to neighborhoods since the 6th century.
Surrounded by salty sea water, the Venetians built these well systems to collect and filter rain water to be stored as freshwater.
The system was used until 1884 when a modern system was built.
On the website "Venipedia" you can find a page dedicated to the wells of Venice which they say number approximately 231.
Here they have diagrams that show how the wells functioned as well as numbered lists of the wells and a map that locates them.
