Vernazza feels somewhat larger than Riomaggiore, but still has a picturesque waterfront with a small harbor that is the real draw.
In 1994, while we were there, they were having some sort of harbor swim competition and people lined the jetty to watch.
The water looked so inviting I actually took the time to cool off and join some of the non-competitive swimmers at the end of the jetty.
