When the volcanic ash fell over Pompeii, bodies were trapped in the ash and pumice. So where a lot of other artifacts that have been recovered.
Over the years, the bodies trapped in the ashes decomposed leaving a void in the ash/pumice in the exact shape of the body when it died.
Archeologists were able to pour plaster into these voids, then break the ash/pumice away, leaving a casting of the body in its last moments before death.
