travel europe italy campania positano
Positano is a town and comune on the dramatic Amalfi coast in the region of Campania on the west coast of Italy.
Here, the hillside rises steeply from the sea providing a beautiful setting for Positano which has been a holiday resort since the time of the Roman Empire.
I love cities that are defined by the landscape... Positano has a great setting.
I have driven all over the world, but the roads and streets into this town are some of the most challenging.
They almost require a European mentality for aggressive driving... there is no time or place for courtesy... either you know what to expect from the local drivers or you are lost.
Our guide parked about four hundred feet above the harbor in a garage built into the hillside and, seemingly, held up by the closeness of a couple dozen cars packed bumper to bumper.
I walked what seemed like a mile down the pedestrian street leading to the bayfront.
I petered out in the heat when I reached the plaza at Santa Maria Asuncia, knowing that I still had to crawl back up.
Luckily, Lynn, who hadn't taken the climb, had a cold fruit icee for me when I returned.
