Santorini, also known as Thira or Thera, is a beautiful, crescent shaped, rocky island that many people think was the site of the fabled Atlantis....
A cluster of islands are what is left of the rim of a caldera of an ancient volcano.
The two largest areas of population are Thira (Fira) and Oia, both of which cling to the cliffs high above the water of the caldera.
The "backside" of the island is sparsely populated and relatively flat.
There are active archeological excavations that can be visited at Akrotiri on the southern end of the island.
Because of its visual drama, both natural and man made, it is one of my favorite spots to visit.
