travel europe france the south of france saorge

Saorge, in southeastern France, used to be in the old County of Nice and was the site of historic battles between the First French Repulic and Sardinia.
We were driving between Nice and Turin through the Meritime Alps when we came upon Saorge clinging dramatically to the hillside.
We stopped for a brief visit to take in the ambiance of the town and shoot some photos.
Walking through this towns narrow streets was like stepping back in time and seeing glimpses of a historic culture.
It was difficult to see what kept this commune going... tourism did not seem to be a factor at this point in 1994.
