The cruise ships dock northwest of the old walled town of Dubrovnik which projects south on a point of land where the coast runs east and west.
Most cruise tourists take a bus into town where they are dumped off on the west end near a small harbor guarded by Fort Lovrijenac and Fort Bokar.
The main old port is on the opposite side of town guarded by St. John Fortress.
The modern city of Dubrovnik has spread along the foothills in both directions from old town.
There are several resorts with beaches along the waters edge on both sides of old town.
